What is IPAM?
IPAM, or IP Address Management, is the structured practice of planning, allocating, documenting, and monitoring IP address space. It gives network teams one reliable place to understand which subnets are assigned, who owns them, how much capacity remains, and where a new range can be allocated safely.
What problems does IPAM solve?
Spreadsheets can record a few ranges, but they do not understand CIDR boundaries, parent-child containment, gateway validity, or overlapping allocations. As campuses, branches, server networks, and VLANs grow, manual records produce duplicate assignments and unclear ownership. IPAM turns those records into validated network data.

DHCP assigns leases, DNS maps names, and a CMDB tracks broader configuration items. IPAM focuses on the address space and the relationships between pools, subnets, gateways, and VLANs. These systems may integrate, but accurate address planning remains the foundation.
